Tempting long-memory – on the interpretation of DFA results

چکیده
We study the inference of long-range correlations by means of Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) and argue that power-law scaling of the fluctuation function and thus long-memory may not be assumed a priori but have to be established. This requires the investigation of the local slopes. We account for the variability characteristic for stochastic processes by calculating empirical confidence regions. Comparing a long-memory with a short-memory model shows that the inference of long-range correlations from a finite amount of data by means of DFA is not specific. We remark that scaling cannot be concluded from a straight line fit to the fluctuation function in a log-log representation. Furthermore, we show that a local slope larger than α=0.5 for large scales does not necessarily imply longmemory. We also demonstrate, that it is not valid to conclude from a finite scaling region of the fluctuation function to an equivalent scaling region of the autocorrelation function. Finally, we review DFA results for the Prague temperature data set and show that long-range correlations cannot not be concluded unambiguously.

XRD-DFA Analysis of data on discrete units of micro-molecules: Applied on C52H60N4S8Zn2
X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique due to it's strength for providing visualized atomic model of molecules, stands as first in the field of characterization of new synthesized molecules. Here, the analysis of diffraction data on discrete units of new, not yet fairly known structure of molecule $rm C_{52} H_{60} N_4 S_8 Zn_2$ is performed to obtain a quantitative view of the structure of the syst...
متن کاملThe effect of intrahippocampal microinjection of Naloxone on short –term and long-term memory in adult male rats
Introduction:The hippocampus is one for the major centers of learning and memory. Role of the opioid system has been investigated and on the other hand receptors related to this system such as mu-opioid receptors (MOR) are extended in the hippocampus. In this study the effect of Naloxone administration as a mu opioid receptor antagonist on passive avoidance memory in adult male rats was i...
متن کاملThe effect of acute restraint stress and dexamethasone on retrieval of long-term memory in rats: an interaction with opiate system
This study investigated whether application of acute restraint stress or dexamethasone, as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, impaired retrieval of long-term memory and if pretreatment with opiate antagonist naloxone blocked their effects on memory retrieval. Young adult male rats were trained in one trial inhibitory avoidance task (1 mA, 1.5 s foot shock). On retention test given 48 hr after t...

متن کاملThe effects of CCK-8S on spatial memory and long-term potentiation at CA1 during induction of stress in rats
Objective(s): Cholecystokinin (CCK) has been proposed as a mediator in stress. However, it is still not fully documented what are its effects. We aimed to evaluate the effects of systemic administration of CCK exactly before induction of stress on spatial memory and synaptic plasticity at CA1 in rats. Materials and Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: the control, the control-C...
